Course Information
The King of the Lake series takes place along the shores of W. Kerr Scott Reservoir in the scenic foothills of Northwest North Carolina.
Time Trials: The first time trial race will take place on the Overmountain Victory Trail, racing from the W. Kerr Scott Visitor Center to Bandits Roost Campground. The second time trial will take place at Dark Mountain, utilizing the BURN 24-Hour Challenge loop. Time trial competition returns to the Overmountain Victory Trail for the third and final race of the series, with racing beginning at Bandits Roost and ending at the Visitor Center.
The Dual Slalom races will take place on the new course located at Marley's Ford Recreation Area.
The Super D races will take place on the Super D course at Dark Mountain.

Get ready to suffer...64 miles of pure hill! Ride opens with a six-mile climb from Traphill to Roaring Gap atop the Blue Ridge. With about 1,700 feet of elevation gain, a 5% average grade and several stretches of leg busting double-digit grades, it's the equivalent of a Category 2 climb in the Tour de France! Plenty of shorter hills follow as the ride winds through the highlands of Alleghany County, NC and Grayson County, VA. Mahogany Rock Road is the ride's steepest climb. “Moonshine and Thunder” tells the story of the early years of running ‘shine and racing in the mountains of NC and its evolution to NASCAR. It is a story steeped in Scotch-Irish culture and tradition and doused with moonshine!
Set in Wilkes County- once known as the moonshine capitol of the world—the play focuses primarily on one man and his family – a man that went on to be a
NASCAR legend – Junior Johnson.
The play focuses on Junior Johnson through his early years as a moonshiner to his early years in NASCAR – documenting the beginnings of a living legend. It will be a historical fiction and chronicles the early life and times of Junior Johnson from running shine to his first big win on a “super speedway” at the Daytona 500 in 1960.
“Moonshine and Thunder – The Junior Johnson Story” is a celebration of the people living in the foothills of North Carolina. It will be told with respect for the people who shaped this area and put Wilkes County on the map.
